Mr. Torrez is the author of Off Base: New Insights Into an Old Game, a 1998 book on baseball that anticipated the “statistical revolution” that has changed the game of baseball. Mr. Torrez has gone on to represent and advise professional baseball players and agents in connection with various legal disputes, including:
- representing the relative of a then-major-league baseball player in connection with the Congressional hearings on performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs);
- representing an agency in connection with a lawsuit brought by a current client’s former agent; and
- representing current and former major-league baseball players in current business endeavors.
Mr. Torrez wrote extensively about the Alex Rodriguez lawsuit, and was interviewed in connection therewith by The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and other media outlets. Mr. Torrez correctly predicted that Alex Rodriguez would withdraw his lawsuit against MLB several months in advance; you can read all about it here.
Mr. Torrez is a credible presence in the world of baseball law; he speaks the language; he is familiar with the MLBPA rules and other governing documents; he knows how these kinds of cases work; and he keeps abreast of analytics and the insider world of baseball.
